Different types of break, FROM BEGINNERS TO ADVANCED level of surfing, all within few minutes FROM HOME. Main reason why San Juan Del Sur is such a prime location for surfing.

Why San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is surrounded by surf breaks. 5 beach breaks are within 15-30 min driving distance from town and no matter what your skill level is, we will get you to the right break. Depending on the tide you could surf 2-3 different surf breaks a day! Not to forget that in this area we get offshore winds 300+ days a year.

15 min from San Juan del Sur, Playa Remanso is the closest of all the surf breaks. It is a Horse-shoe bay and swell always enters in an angle, so the waves rolling in are softer and a little bit slower, which makes it also a really fun long boarding break. This beach is perfect for Beginners as well as for Intermediates!

Playa Hermosa is about 25 min from San Juan del Sur and the longest beach in this area. Depending on the swell direction there are 5-7 peaks. It is a good spot for Beginners because there is plenty of room to practice on the inside section. Intermediates and Advanced Surfers will find super fun waves in both directions and on bigger days some nice barrels.

“The Wedges”

30 min from town, Playa Yankee is a surf break for more advanced surfers. Depending on the swell size you can ride chest high to overhead waves. There are different peaks and the most consistent is the wedge next to a rock cluster, which produces clean and fast left breaking barrels if the size is right.

This stunning beach is about 20 min from town and very popular amongst surfers from all over the world. Playa Maderas is the most consistent break and has waves for every skill level, about 3 main peaks and with a big swell a left point called Machete. Depending on the swell size you can find chest high peelers to double overhead and barreling waves.

About 30 min from San Juan del Sur, Playa Escameca is indeed a hidden gem. The northern part of the beach, also called Escamequita, has a nice right hander next to the rocks, and south of the beach you can find a left hander near the little rivermouth. Playa Escameca is mostly uncrowded and a really sweet spot to spend a day just surfing and relaxing.
